Gniezno: Poland's first capital
Gniezno is where Polish statehood begins. The heart of the town is the cathedral, with the relics of Saint Adalbert and the famous Gniezno Doors, Romanesque bronze castings depicting the saint's life. The first kings were crowned here, and in the year 1000 the Congress of Gniezno took place. Climb Lech Hill, go up the cathedral tower for a view over the town and look into the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State. Two to three hours are enough for a relaxed visit to Gniezno itself.
Biskupin: a stronghold 2,700 years old
Biskupin is a reconstruction of a fortified settlement of the Lusatian culture, inhabited more than 2,700 years ago. Wooden houses, ramparts, a gate and a pier over the lake recreate Iron Age life. It is an open-air museum, great for children too, because you can step inside the huts and see how everyday life looked millennia ago. Set aside another two hours here, and in autumn check whether the Archaeological Festival is on.

Book a trip on the Piast RouteHow to get there from Poznań
You can reach Gniezno itself by train in about 40 minutes, but Biskupin sits away from the main railway line and getting there by public transport takes changes and plenty of time. By car, the whole loop of Poznań, Gniezno, Biskupin and back is about 150 kilometres. The easiest way to cover both places is a private transfer: from 690 PLN (ca. 173 EUR) per car to Gniezno and back (1 to 3 people), with hotel pickup and a driver who waits while you visit. Child seats are included in the price.
The Piast Route: what else is along the way
Gniezno and Biskupin are the core of the Piast Route, but along the way you can add Ostrów Lednicki, an island on Lake Lednica with the remains of Mieszko I's palatium, and the Wielkopolska Ethnographic Park. If you travel with a driver, you can plan such a route flexibly, without watching timetables and connections.
When to go
It is most pleasant in spring and early autumn, when it is warm and Biskupin is less crowded than on summer weekends. It is worth setting off early to visit the cathedral in Gniezno calmly and still have time for the open-air museum before closing. You will find the prices for trips around the area in the Poznań pricing, and the full list of routes in the routes section.
