Rogalin: palace, gallery and oaks
Rogalin is the Baroque and Classicist palace of the Raczyński family, surrounded by a park and famous old trees. The former coach house holds a painting gallery with canvases by Polish and European masters, including a monumental work by Jan Matejko. The greatest draw, however, are the oaks Lech, Czech and Rus, three monumental trees hundreds of years old, growing on the water meadows by the Warta. A walk through the park and the gallery take two to three hours.
Kórnik: castle and arboretum
Kórnik is a neo-Gothic castle by a lake, rebuilt in the 19th century to a design inspired by English architecture. Inside you can see the historic interiors, the armoury and the library, and around it stretches the arboretum, one of the oldest and richest dendrological gardens in Poland, with thousands of species of trees and shrubs. Set aside another two hours for the castle and a walk through the arboretum. In spring it is worth coming for the flowering magnolias and rhododendrons.
