Ksiaz Castle
Ksiaz makes an impression from afar, as it emerges from the forest above the Pelcznica valley. The interiors blend styles from successive eras, from baroque to neo-Renaissance, and the most striking is the Maximilian Hall. Terraced gardens and a palm house surround the castle, and a stud farm operates nearby. Set aside about two to three hours for an unhurried tour of the castle and a walk around the terraces.
The Riese tunnels as an option
Beneath the castle and in the nearby Owl Mountains, the Germans dug a system of tunnels during the war under the codename Riese, whose purpose is still disputed today. Part of the corridors under Ksiaz can be visited with a guide. It is a dark, cool route, so bring something warm to put on. The tunnels add about an hour to the visit and make an intriguing counterpoint to the grand halls above.

A dozen or so kilometres from the castle lies Swidnica with its Church of Peace, one of the largest wooden baroque churches in Europe and a UNESCO site. A twin Church of Peace stands in Jawor. Both were built after the Thirty Years War for Protestants, out of wood, clay and straw, without towers or walls, yet they still amaze with their richly painted interiors. Half an hour to an hour is enough for each.
