Łódź-Lublinek airport (LCJ)

Łódź has its own airport named after Władysław Reymont, known for short as Lublinek and coded LCJ. It sits just a few kilometres from the centre, so getting into town from there is quick. The catch is that it is a small airport with a very limited number of connections, mostly seasonal and charter flights. If you are lucky enough to catch a direct flight to Lublinek, you can be in the centre within a quarter of an hour. In practice, though, most travellers still land in Warsaw.

So before you book a room and plan your arrival, check where you are really flying from. Direct connections to Lublinek come and go from season to season, so what worked a year ago may already be out of date. If you cannot find a sensible flight straight to Łódź, do not worry. In the end it is usually easier to aim for Warsaw and cover the last leg overland, because the choice of flights and fares there is far greater.

Via Warsaw Chopin: the most common route

Because Chopin handles hundreds of connections, most travellers to Łódź land there and cover the final 130 kilometres overland. Add to that the peace of mind: you are not searching for the platform with your suitcases, not worrying about the last train, and the driver simply waits, even if the plane is late.

Train from Warsaw to Łódź

This is the most popular option if you are already in the capital. Trains connect Warsaw with the modern underground Łódź Fabryczna station, and the fastest ones cover the route in about an hour and a half. There are plenty of departures during the day, a ticket costs a few dozen PLN, and Fabryczna sits right in the heart of the city, a few steps from Piotrkowska Street. If you fly in via Chopin, you first reach Warsaw's central railway station and change onto the train to Łódź.

Just keep two things in mind. First, from Chopin airport you have to reach the Warsaw railway station first, which adds a little time and one change. Second, at rush hour and on weekends the trains can be full, so a ticket with a seat reservation is best bought in advance. Łódź Fabryczna station, on the other hand, is very convenient: modern, underground and positioned so that you can walk from the platform to Piotrkowska. That is a big plus if your hotel is in the centre.

Who it suits: you are travelling light, you are already in central Warsaw and you want to pay the least.

Local transfer within Łódź itself

Once you are on the ground, getting around the city and the surrounding area is easy. A driver ride around Łódź, for example from the station to your hotel or on a trip out of town, starts from 260 PLN (approx. 65 EUR) per car. The price is agreed in advance, with no meter and no night surcharges, and child seats are included. This is handy when you are carrying luggage or planning several stops in one day.

Łódź has efficient public transport, trams and buses will take you almost anywhere, and the old industrial part of the city is best explored on foot. A driver transfer comes in useful when you want to link several distant points in a single day, set off early in the morning to the station, or carry heavier luggage. If you have a direct flight to Lublinek, use it. If you are already in Warsaw and travelling light, take the train to Łódź Fabryczna.
