Why you cannot drive up to Morskie Oko

Morskie Oko lies within the Tatra National Park, and the last stretch of road is closed to car traffic. You leave the car in the car park at Palenica Białczańska, about 8 kilometres from Zakopane. In season this car park fills up very early in the morning, and drivers then circle looking for a space or queue along the road. That is why many visitors to Zakopane reach Palenica without their own car, so as not to start the day fighting over parking.

From Palenica to the lake: on foot or by horse-drawn cart

A wide, paved road about 9 kilometres long leads from Palenica Białczańska to the mountain hut by Morskie Oko. One way, at an easy pace, the walk takes about two hours. The climb is gentle, with no difficult sections, so children and people without mountain fitness will manage it too, provided they allow enough time.

An alternative are the horse-drawn carts that run along most of the route and shorten the walk, though the final stretch up to the lake itself is covered on foot anyway. In winter part of the road is served by sleighs. You pay on the spot, and in season you should expect a queue, so it does not always work out faster than walking.

How much time to set aside

Realistically you need five to six hours for the whole outing. That breaks down into two hours walking up, a while at the lake for photos and a rest, and two hours down. If you want to go higher, up to Czarny Staw above Morskie Oko, add another hour and a half there and back. That is already a steep climb, but the view repays the effort.

Transfer to Palenica Białczańska

The simplest way to sidestep the parking problem is to be driven up to Palenica. We pick you up from your hotel in Zakopane and take you straight to the park entrance: from 260 PLN (ca. 65 EUR) per car (1 to 4 people) one way, price agreed in advance. You also arrange a return time, so after your descent you are not hunting for a taxi or waiting for a seat on a minibus. Child seats are included.

Park ticket and practical odds and ends

At Palenica Białczańska you buy an entrance ticket to the Tatra National Park. It is a small amount, a few PLN per person, but it is worth having small change or a card, because a queue forms at the ticket booths in season. On the trail, just before the hut, there is a spot where you can buy a hot drink and a snack, so you do not have to carry supplies for the whole day. Toilets are at the car park and at the hut, none along the way, which is worth remembering with children.

Footwear is one thing not to skimp on. The road is paved and gentle, but long, so flip-flops or city trainers will take their toll. Comfortable sports shoes are perfectly enough; hiking boots are not necessary unless you plan to go higher above the lake. If you bring a pushchair, you can wheel it along most of the route, though the final climb can be steep.

When to go to avoid the crowds

It is quietest early in the morning; best to set off from Palenica before eight. The road is then empty and the lake calm and well lit for photos. Weekends and school holidays bring the heaviest traffic, so if you have the choice, aim for a weekday. There are fewer people in spring and autumn, but check conditions, because snow may linger on the trail and the horse-drawn carts do not always run then.

The weather in the Tatras can change within a quarter of an hour, so even on a sunny morning take a rain jacket and something warmer to layer up. In summer, storms often roll in during the afternoon, so it is better to have your descent behind you before the afternoon.
