Gniezno lies ~55 km from Poznań and is regarded as the cradle of Polish statehood. It was here, in the year 1000, that the Congress of Gniezno took place, and the cathedral was the site of the first royal coronations.
The most important sight is the Gothic Primatial Basilica with the relics of St. Adalbert and the famous 12th-century Gniezno Doors, covered with bas-reliefs depicting the saint's life. Nearby, you can visit Lech Hill and the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State.
The sightseeing easily fits into half a day. You travel privately, so you set the pace and the length of the stops yourself. A typical plan is a morning pickup, about an hour's drive each way, and a few hours on site.
