Solina: the dam and a lake cruise
The heart of the trip is the Solina dam, the tallest in Poland at over 80 metres. You can walk along its crest, look down over the surface of Lake Solina and stop at a café for some local ice cream. In summer pleasure boats set off from below the dam: a short cruise across the green water takes a few dozen minutes and reveals coves you'd never reach from the shore. It's the most recognisable image of the Bieszczady and a good way to start the day.
The high meadows and the views
The Bieszczady are famous for their połoniny, the treeless ridges from which the mountains stretch to the horizon. A full climb up Połonina Wetlińska or Caryńska takes half a day of walking, so on a day trip that also takes in Solina it's worth choosing a shorter route or a viewpoint by the road. In autumn the slopes blaze gold and red, and that's when the Bieszczady look their finest.
Ustrzyki and around
On the way, or instead of a longer hike, it's worth calling in at Ustrzyki Dolne, the gateway to the Bieszczady, with its Natural History Museum and a peaceful market square.
