Elbląg lies exactly 70 km east of Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN), on the A1 motorway and the S22/S7 expressways. It's a popular destination not only for Elbląg residents themselves, but above all for visitors flying to Masuria, the Vistula Spit (Krynica Morska, Stegna, Sztutowo) and Frombork. The journey by car takes 1 hour 05 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes depending on traffic. In this article we compare every realistic way of getting there — including a worked example for a family of four.

Transport options from Gdańsk Airport to Elbląg

On the Gdańsk Airport → Elbląg route you have four realistic options. Each has its pros and cons depending on whether you travel solo, as a couple, or with family and luggage.

OptionTotal timePriceDrawbacks
FlixBus / long-distance coach~2h 00min – 2h 30min25–35 PLN/ppFirst you need to get to the bus station from the airport (SKM 30 min + walking), few departures
PKP train (PolRegio / IC with a transfer)~2h 00min – 2h 30min30–40 PLN/ppTransfer at Gdańsk Główny, getting to the airport via PKM/SKM, awkward with luggage
Taxi on the meter~1h 10min~200–280 PLNPrice climbs on the meter in traffic, no flight tracking, limited luggage
Private ShuttleHero transfer~1h 05min – 1h 20minfrom 380 PLN per car (up to 4 pax)Price per car, not per person — wins for couples and families

1. FlixBus / long-distance coach

There are practically no direct coaches from Gdańsk Airport terminal to Elbląg. FlixBus and similar carriers depart from Gdańsk Główny bus station (next to the railway station), so first you need to get to the city centre — by PKM/SKM train (~30 minutes + 10 minutes on foot). The Gdańsk → Elbląg leg itself takes around 1h 10min – 1h 30min, with only a few departures a day; tickets cost 25–35 PLN per person. Pro: cheapest for a solo traveller. Con: total time 2h+, awkward departure hours, uncomfortable with luggage.

2. PKP train — PolRegio + InterCity (with a transfer)

From Gdańsk Airport you reach Gdańsk Główny station by PKM/SKM train (~30 minutes, 5–7 PLN). From there, PolRegio and IC trains run to Elbląg — the leg takes 50–80 minutes, with second-class tickets at 17–30 PLN. With the transfer, waiting on the platform and walking from the airport terminal, the realistic total is 2h – 2h 30min. Pro: cheap for one person, relatively comfortable in the carriage. Con: a transfer with luggage, PKP delays, an irregular timetable, and very few trains running after 22:00.

3. Taxi from the terminal rank

A metered taxi from the airport to Elbląg costs 200–280 PLN depending on the operator and time of day. At night the rate goes up. The drive time is identical to a private transfer — around 1h 10min. Pro: no booking needed, available on the spot. Con: no flight tracking (if you're delayed — the taxi leaves), the meter price climbs in traffic, no child seats, and the driver may not know a specific address in Elbląg.

4. Private ShuttleHero transfer — door-to-door

The most popular option for families and groups. Fixed price from 380 PLN for the whole premium-class car (up to 4 people) or from 549 PLN for a van (up to 8 people). The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, the transfer takes 1h 05min – 1h 20min, and we drive to your specific address in Elbląg — hotel, apartment, office or family home. Child seats 30 PLN (~€8) each. VAT invoice on request. Flight tracking — if you're delayed, the driver waits.

Why a private transfer wins — the maths

Many travellers think: "a coach at 30 PLN per person has to be cheaper than a 400 PLN transfer". That's true for someone travelling solo. But for a family, a couple, or a small group, the maths flips:

GroupBus / train (total)ShuttleHero transferDifference
1 traveller + luggage~35 PLN380 PLNBus cheaper
2 travellers + luggage~70 PLN380 PLNBus still cheaper
3 travellers + luggage~105 PLN380 PLNBus cheaper by ~275 PLN
4 travellers (family) + luggage~140 PLN380 PLNTransfer dearer by ~240 PLN, BUT…
5–8 travellers + luggage~175–280 PLN (coach)from 380 PLN (sedan), van up to 8 pax from 549 PLNTransfer dearer by ~270 PLN

The numbers show that the coach/train formally wins on price even for a family of four — but only if you count just the ticket. Here's what an extra ~240 PLN for the transfer actually buys you:

  • Zero transfers — with kids after a flight, that's the difference between a relaxed arrival and a family meltdown
  • Child seats (30 PLN) (you won't find them on a train or coach)
  • No luggage limits — skis, a pushchair, a child's dinghy, XXL suitcases — it all fits in the boot
  • Flight tracking — a delay doesn't cost you a single PLN extra
  • Driver with a name sign in the arrivals hall — Meet & Greet
  • 1h 10min vs 2h 30min — 1h 20min of holiday time you actually get to keep
  • To a specific address — not just to the train station in Elbląg (from the station you'd still need a taxi anyway)
The real maths: add to the PKP/coach ticket a taxi from Elbląg station to your address (30–50 PLN), plus snacks and drinks for the kids on the way (40–60 PLN) — the total cost of the "cheaper" family option rises to around 230 PLN. The gap to a private transfer shrinks to ~150 PLN, and you save 1h 20min and a lot of nerves.

The Gdańsk Airport → Elbląg route

The standard route from Gdańsk Airport to Elbląg runs along the Tri-City ring road (S6), then south along the A1 motorway, exiting onto the S7 / S22 heading for Elbląg. The total distance is 70 km, with a typical transfer time of 1h 05min – 1h 20min. On Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings there's often more traffic on the Gdańsk ring road (Sopot, Gdynia) — we add 15–20 minutes for those slots.

In winter, with heavy snowfall, the journey may stretch to 1h 40min — but as an expressway, the S7/S22 is gritted as a priority. Our drivers know the route by heart and switch to an alternative via the DK7 if needed.

We also cover the same direction as part of our Gdańsk Airport → Malbork transfer (the Teutonic castle) — Malbork lies 25 km before Elbląg and we often combine both destinations into a half-day sightseeing programme.

  • Bażantarnia — a large forest complex with walking trails on the outskirts of the city
