Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oświęcim, ~70 km from Krakow, was the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp — the largest site of the Holocaust and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered here. It receives over 2 million visitors a year.
