Frombork — where the heliocentric revolution began

Frombork (German: Frauenburg) is a small town on the shores of the Vistula Lagoon, about 95 km east of Gdańsk. It is here that Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) spent much of his life as a canon of the Cathedral Chapter, and here that he completed "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" — the work that placed the Sun at the centre of the solar system.

The Gothic Cathedral complex (14th century) is beautifully preserved and sits on a hill overlooking the Vistula Lagoon. Copernicus's tomb is inside the cathedral — alongside a monument erected when his remains were identified in 2005 by DNA analysis.

Best for: history enthusiasts, astronomy lovers, anyone interested in the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. Combine with Elbląg on the way back.
