Toruń — Medieval Marvel on the Vistula

Toruń is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Central Europe. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 for its outstanding Gothic architecture. It is also the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, who developed his revolutionary heliocentric theory of the solar system here in the 15th–16th centuries.

The Old Town is a treasure of Gothic brick architecture: the Town Hall (one of the finest in Northern Europe), the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral of SS. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, the Copernicus House Museum, and of course the city's legendary pierniki — traditional gingerbread that has been produced here since the Middle Ages.

Note: Toruń is 180 km from Gdańsk (approx. 2 h each way). This is a full-day trip — we recommend an early departure. Museum entries are paid on site and are not included in the tour price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Toruń from Gdańsk?
Toruń is approximately 180 km south of Gdańsk — about 2 hours by car via the A1 expressway. This makes it ideal for a full-day trip with an early start.
Do I need to book museums in Toruń in advance?
For most of the year, walk-in tickets are available at the Copernicus House Museum and the Town Hall Museum. In peak summer season (July–August), we recommend booking the Copernicus House in advance online. We can advise when you make your booking.
Can I buy gingerbread to take home?
Absolutely — Toruń gingerbread (pierniki toruńskie) is one of the best souvenirs in Poland and travels well. There are numerous shops throughout the Old Town. You can also visit the Gingerbread Museum on Rabiańska Street where you can bake and decorate your own.
Can we stop somewhere on the way?
Yes — just let us know. Popular stops on the Gdańsk–Toruń route include Grudziądz (Gothic riverside castle) or Chełmno (another beautiful medieval walled town). Adding a stop will extend the trip — we'll advise on timing when booking.
