Westerplatte — The First Battle of World War II
At 4:45 AM on 1 September 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish Military Transit Depot at Westerplatte, marking the beginning of World War II. A garrison of just 182 Polish soldiers held out for 7 days against thousands of German troops — far longer than ordered.
Today Westerplatte is a place of national remembrance: the monumental 1966 war memorial dominates the skyline, while preserved bunkers, barracks ruins and an on-site museum tell the story of the brave defenders. The site sits at the mouth of the Vistula river, 10 km from Gdańsk city centre.
Combination tip: Westerplatte pairs naturally with Gdańsk Old Town — you can visit both in a half-day. Tell us when booking and we'll plan the combined itinerary.
