What is the Wolf's Lair?

The Wolf's Lair (German: Wolfschanze; Polish: Wilczy Szaniec) was Adolf Hitler's primary military headquarters on the Eastern Front, hidden in the Masurian forest near Gierłoż, close to the town of Kętrzyn. Built between 1940 and 1941, the complex covered over 250 hectares and comprised more than 200 structures — bunkers, barracks, an airstrip and an elaborate defence system.

For over three years (June 1941 – November 1944), the Wolf's Lair served as the nerve centre of the Nazi war machine. Hitler spent more than 800 days here — longer than at any other location during the war.

The July 20, 1944 Assassination Attempt

The Wolf's Lair is best known as the site of Operation Valkyrie — the assassination attempt against Hitler on 20 July 1944. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg placed a briefcase bomb under a conference table in the main briefing barracks. The explosion killed four people and wounded many others, but Hitler survived with only minor injuries.

The failure of the plot led to the arrest and execution of more than 4,500 people suspected of involvement in the resistance movement. Today, you can stand in the exact spot where the bomb exploded — one of the most historically charged locations in Europe.

Historical note: The walls of Hitler's personal bunker were up to 8 metres thick. Even when the Soviets approached in January 1945, the Germans were unable to fully demolish the complex — the bunkers were simply too massive. Most ruins remain standing today.

What to See at Wolf's Lair

  • Hitler's Führerhauptquartier (FHQ) bunker — partially demolished in 1945 but still deeply impressive in scale
  • The conference barracks — site of the July 20 assassination attempt (marked on the map)
  • Hermann Göring's bunker — one of the largest in the complex
  • Martin Bormann's bunker — Hitler's personal secretary and right-hand man
  • The camp's road network and underground tunnels
  • Information centre with photographic exhibition and detailed historical maps
  • Forest cemetery on the site
