Wolf's Lair — what kind of place is it?
Wolf's Lair (German: Wolfsschanze) was Adolf Hitler's secret headquarters, set deep in the Masurian forests near Gierłoż outside Kętrzyn. Built in 1940–1941, the complex covered over 250 hectares and consisted of more than 200 structures — bunkers, barracks, an airfield and a defensive system.
For more than three years (1941–1944), Wolf's Lair was the main command centre for operations on the Eastern Front. Hitler spent a total of over 800 days here during World War II — longer than anywhere else.
The assassination attempt of 20 July 1944
Above all, Wolf's Lair is the place where, on 20 July 1944, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg made his failed attempt on the Führer's life. A bomb in a briefcase exploded during a briefing in the conference barracks, wounding several people — but Hitler survived. The plot (Operation Valkyrie) ended in the arrest and execution of more than 4,500 people suspected of involvement in the conspiracy.
Today you can stand on the exact spot where the bomb went off. It's an experience that's hard to put into words — especially for history enthusiasts.
What to see at Wolf's Lair
- Hitler's bunker (Führerhauptquartier) — blown up by the Germans in 1945, but the ruins have survived in an impressive state
- The conference barracks — the site of the assassination attempt of 20 July 1944
- Hermann Göring's bunker — one of the largest structures in the complex
- Martin Bormann's bunker — Hitler's trusted secretary
- The system of tunnels and access roads
- The forest cemetery — the graves of victims
- The information centre with a photographic exhibition and maps
